This is a diagram of a ceiling rose using the old colours where Live is red and Neutral is black. The earth wires have been omitted for clarity, but must be connected! Hopefully this will make it clearer as to what the wires at the ceiling rose are for. You can see that there is a Live and a neutral that has come from either the consumer unit.
Hope this helps Mike MGE Electrical. Answered 18th Mar 2016. Your 3 black wires are your neutrals, 4 earth wires are your c.p.c's, your 3 red wires connected together are your permanent lives and your red and black connected together are your switched lives. Of course it matters which way you connect these wires in the new fitting so as you seem unsure as to what you are doing, i would.
The red wire is connected to the (L1) terminal, the black wire (marked with red tape or red sleeving) is connected to the (L2) terminal and the earth wire is connected to the earth terminal. If you are using a plastic switch the earth wires will need to be connected to the terminal in the terminal box (as shown above) because there are no earth terminals on plastic switches.Single phase wires had been red for some time until the 2004 harmonisation. Before 1977, single phase wires were coloured red and they didn’t change until 2004. At the moment, they are coloured dark brown. As for the three-phase cables, current European standards demand that they are coloured grey and black. The L2 wires are coloured black while the L3 cables are gray. But this was not the.Up until the 1970’s single phase electrical wires were coloured green, black and red. This was an issue since the most common form of colour blindness is where red and green are perceived as identical due a reduced sensitivity to red or green light. As a result since the late 70’s the colour multi coloured (yellow and green) Earth was introduced, however it was only since 2004 that red was.
The colors, regulated by the National Electrical Code in the United States, are standardized for safety. Black wires are always hot wires, meaning that they carry electricity. Black wires are never used as ground or neutral wires and must always be treated with caution. Red wires are also hot wires. As hot wires can be connected to each other.Read More
New vs Old Wiring Colours. In 2006, Amendment 2 of 17 th Edition BS7671 Wiring Regulations saw a change to “harmonise” the UK colours with the European cable colours for consistency and to avoid confusion. It’s important that properties get their wiring checked, to see if the wiring colours are out of date, have deteriorated over time, and to check if they comply with BS 7671 Wiring.Read More
When replacing an old chandelier with a new ceiling, there was one red wire, two white wires tied together and two black wires tied together. I had capped the red wire and tied in the remaining wires to their respective colors. When I had turned on the power, the light had turned on even though the dimmer switch had been turned off.Read More
PL10E motor wires with its two operation wires (Red and Green) and the linked return connections wired in Black. Next is the PL13 switch then the pair ready to be joined together. Photo four shows the PL13 now fitted to the PL10E. Finally the motor wiring loom has been fitted with a six way terminal block to aid wiring and any later testing as needed. Note the 'E' of the PL10 this denotes its.Read More
This exposes the red, black and green-yellow wires inside the flex. On a spur circuit you’ll find one wire of each colour; on a ring circuit you’ll find two wires of each colour. If the flex contains two wires of each color, connect the wires of the same colour by twisting together the exposed copper cores. Twist the wires tightly to form a robust connection. This forms three pairs of wires.Read More
There are 2 red wires, and there should be 1 red and 1 black. There are no markings on the back of the dimmer switch, and on the back of the new switch I've got 3 points -COM, L1 and L2. Logic would say that the 2 wires should go in COM and L1 or L2, but the problem is both wires are the same colour, and there aren't any COM or L markings on the back of the old switch.Read More

If you are unsure you should really have a electrician come over and fit the light for you. from what you are saying it sounds like its the end of line for the lighting circuit, therefore you have one permanently live cable and one switch cable. if you join the two red wires together at the fitting in a suitable connector block or wago connector, put one of the black wires in the live pot (the.Read More
